Secret Monitor
The Order of David and Jonathan
The Order of David and Jonathan
The Order of Secret Monitor was brought to England from America in 1875, the first Grand Council being formed two years later. It comprises three degrees, those of Secret Monitor, Prince, and Supreme Ruler, the last of which is the 'Chair' or installation degree.
The first degree concerns the remarkable friendship, narrated in the Book of Samuel, between the youthful David, (then a shepherd but later to be King of Israel and father of King Solomon) and Jonathan, a son of King Saul. It teaches a beautiful lesson in friendship and fidelity.
The second degree, also based on the Book of Samuel, narrates how Saul jealously sought the life of David and further relates to an interesting legend of the methods contrived to thwart the efforts of the jealous king.
The degree of Supreme Ruler pertains to the Kingship of David and is concerned with the duties associated with the leadership of a Conclave.

Assemblies of the order are referred to as Conclaves, with a Supreme Ruler at its head. Two unique officers called Visiting Deacons are tasked with looking after the wellbeing of the members of the Conclave in a role similar to the Almoner of a Craft Lodge.
All Master Masons are entitled to apply for membership of the order.
